DON’T GET PENALIZED FOR NON-COMPLIANCE! Here are FOUR options for these various pricing programs:
Cash Discount:
Advertise a list price (the highest price being paid) and offer a cash discount from that price. Under this model, you will tell the merchant “you are profiting the same on every sale.” They have a price of $1.04 for an item and when cash is rung, they charge $1.00. When card is rung, they charge $1.04, the HIGHER list price. Their deposit on card sales will also be $1.00 ($0.04 going to EPI and you for their fees.) Hence, the motto: “Profit the same on every sale.” You do not need signage to offer a cash discount, but could simply say on any signage “We offer a further discount of 4% when paying with cash.”
Dual Pricing (aka What the Gas Station Does):
This is no different than a gas station. You go into the place, and on every location where pricing is advertised (menus, menu boards, shelf labels, items, etc.) there are TWO PRICES listed. CARD and CASH. The menu or menu board says: Hoagie – CARD: $10.40 CASH: $10.00 There is no way to do dual pricing without displaying two prices. If you do not display two prices, this is 110% non-compliant. Dual pricing is not “our prices are pre-configured for cash and are adjusted if you don’t pay with cash.” Dual pricing is also not a two price option on a POS device for card and cash at the time of the purchase. Dual Pricing means and is exactly what it says: TWO PRICES, one card and one cash, on every place pricing is communicated.
Fuel Surcharge/Admin Fee Program:
The other program is commonly called “RCD” – this is the same thing as a “Fuel Surcharge”. This is when a fee is added to ALL PAYMENTS TYPES – this includes cash. If you do not add a fee universally across the board on all payment types, it is 110% non-compliant. If you “waive” the fee for cash after assessing it, it is 110% non-compliant. Why you would want to give the customer a horrible experience of paying a fee on cash, check, gift card, etc. and not just raise your prices is beyond me. This is really a shitty customer experience and should be avoided. It also has a greater propensity to lead to fines.
Surcharge: Must be in % format
The final option is an actual surcharge program. You must register the merchant for surcharging (we help with this) and the surcharge limit is 3%. Merchants must wait 30 days before looking to surcharge. Surcharging may be done on credit cards only. Debit cards (signature debit, prepaid debit or pin-debit) cannot be surcharged. Signage must be at the entrance to the store and at the Point of Sale as well. The surcharge amount must be listed on the receipt. Anything contrary to the above method of surcharging is non-compliant. Exatouch does not support surcharging but we have other options of equipment. Signage is provided by the card brands. Again, surcharge is not a really good customer experience either and should be avoided.
